European Innovation Fund Commits $1 Billion to Critical Minerals Processing Projects

08 Jul 2025

Summary: The European Innovation Fund has announced a $1 billion commitment to support new technologies in critical minerals processing. This is the largest investment aimed at strengthening domestic processing and reducing dependency on external supplies. The projects will focus on lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements.

The European Innovation Fund (EIF), a key financial instrument of the EU, has announced the allocation of its largest funding package to date, worth $1 billion, for projects related to the processing of critical raw materials. This initiative is a direct response to the goals of the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) and the growing need to strengthen the domestic processing industry. According to the European Commission, the EU's current processing capacity covers only 5-10% of its total needs for strategic minerals like lithium and rare earth elements. The new investments will target projects that employ innovative, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly technologies, including hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. The funding will be distributed among 15-20 projects over the next three years. This is expected to increase processing capacity for lithium by 30% and for rare earth elements by 40% by 2029, significantly strengthening the European supply chain and mitigating geopolitical risks.
