Strategic Titanium Stockpiling in the US and EU: Implications for Defense Sector

18 Sep 2025

The recent update to the US National Defense Stockpile (NDS) requirements for 2025-2026 highlights a critical shortage of aerospace-grade titanium sponge.

Market Impact: European aerospace giants are following suit, increasing their safety stocks by 25%. This move is putting immense pressure on the spot market for rutile concentrates.

Price Data: Rutile prices have hit a 24-month high, currently trading at $1,850–$1,920 per tonne.

GranTi Insights: Our logistics department reports a shift toward containerized shipping for small-batch high-purity ores to avoid the delays currently plaguing dry-bulk terminals. Securing "conflict-free" and "ESG-certified" material is no longer a preference but a mandatory requirement for defense sub-contractors in the Schengen area.
