Titanium Sponge Market Tightens as Aerospace and Defense Procurement Ramps Up for Q2
13 Feb 2026
The global market for aerospace-grade titanium sponge is experiencing severe supply tightening in mid-February 2026. Driven by a 18% year-on-year increase in procurement targets from European defense consortiums and commercial aircraft manufacturers expanding their production backlogs, spot prices for 99.7% pure titanium sponge have climbed 7.2% since January, reaching $11,800 per tonne.
While new extraction and processing initiatives in Australia and the US were fast-tracked under Western critical minerals programs throughout 2025, these facilities are currently in their technical testing phases and will not contribute meaningful commercial volumes until at least Q3 2026. Consequently, European industrial consumers remain heavily reliant on Japanese exporters, who have already committed over 85% of their Q1 and Q2 capacities to long-term framework agreements.
GranTi’s market analysis indicates that high-end titanium derivatives, including specialized powders for 3D additive manufacturing in aerospace, will face the longest lead times, now extending up to 18 weeks. To insulate operations against production stoppages, manufacturers are urged to look beyond immediate spot sourcing and explore mid-term tolling agreements where raw ilmenite or slag can be secured and processed through verified secondary supply chains.
